Why You Should and How to Make Your Own Granola

Granola is a crunchy, tasty treat that usually comes with with things like yogurt or acai bowls. It can be sweet with a lot of different things mixed in. A lot of store bought granolas have added sugars and ingredients like sweetened dried fruits or chocolate.

I like to make my own granola so I can control the amount of sugar in it. I sweeten mine with just a tablespoon of pure maple syrup. I also like to use just oats, nuts, and seeds since they have more protein and fiber.

Here is a quick and easy recipe to make your own granola. It’s great for sharing with diabetic patients or anyone who wants to limit their sugar intake.

EASY LOW-SUGAR GRANOLA RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds

  • 1/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 300F

  • Combine maple syrup, coconut oil, and vanilla extract in large bowl.

  • Add oats, salt, almonds and pumpkin seeds and mix it up. Using your hands to mix it will melt the coconut oil if it is solid.

  • Spread in a thin layer on a baking sheet and bake for around 12 minutes until lightly toasted. Keep your eye on it, as it can burn easily.

  • Cool for 15 minutes before serving or storing (in an airtight container).
